The BIFA nominations are out

The Queen and The Last King Of Scotland are among the heavily tipped contenders

It’s that time of year again – when kids are gearing up to wander the streets dressed as horror’s most gruesome creations and ask for sweets, or push a crudely crafted dummy around and ask for cash. But it’s also awards season, and Britain’s answer to the Indie Spirit Awards – the British Independent Film Awards (BIFA) are being handed out on 29 November in a ceremony that will likely include plenty of booze on tap and the presence of more than a few famous faces.

This year, the films with the most nominations are Stephen Frears’ The Queen, Kevin Macdonald’s The Last King Of Scotland and Shane Meadows’ This is England, with the likes of Helen Mirren, Forest Whitaker and Peter O’Toole battling it out for the acting gongs.
