Lawrence Kasdan’s chatty classic 1983 drama The Big Chill has entered the sights of the remake cannon.
Sony’s Screen Gems arm has the rights to the movie and is planning to produce a retooled version that will be based on Kasdan’s original concept – seven college friends reunite at a funeral of a pal and end up exploring how their lives turned out.
And because they’re aiming to be hip, “urban” and up-to-date, the new movie (complete with a new title) will be set in the present day and follow African American characters. Regina King has already signed on to produce and play one of the ensemble cast.
The studio is in the middle of tracking down a screenwriter and wants to get cracking on the pic before the end of the year.
