The Boys comic adap abandoned by Sony

Property now up for grabs

Anchorman director Adam McKay’s film adaptation of cult comic The Boys has been abandoned by Sony Pictures.

The adap of Garth Ennis’ violent comic – which follows a group of hard-nuts who attempt to bring justice to arrogant, corrupt superheroes – has been in the works since 2009, but is now looking for a new home.

Producers Neal H Moritz and Jason Netter are reportedly shopping the property around town, and according to McKay, the project’s still got some life in it.

“It’s not dead,” he tells Film School Rejects. “Two studios very interested. Love Sony but they made a mistake. It’s now PG-13. But I found cool ways to keep it edgy.

“Nolan does so much with that rating. I want this movie to have the conceptual floor of MIB: the police for the superheroes, with the bad ass action groove of The Matrix or Oldboy.”

Though the PG-13 rating is a disappointment (surely this is a film for the fans?), it makes sense from a marketing and ticket sales perspective. Here's hoping that Billy, Hughie and The Frenchman make it to the big screen eventually.

Disappointed by the PG-13 rating? Or think McKay can pull it off? Talk to us...

Noooo they need to make the film version of The Boys a 18 or a hardcore 15 certificate with LionsGate making it. plus I am a big fan of the comics & I think they should base the film on The Boys graphic novels of 'We Gotta Go Now' or 'The Self Preservation Socitey' or combine the two together because I think that would be really cool & I think the cast should be Craig Fairbrass or Gerard Butler as Billy Buther. Simon Pegg as Wee Hugie. Idris Elba as Mothers Milk. Jason Statham as The Frenchman & Bai Ling as The Female. there end of my rant. :)

I'm usually one who cries foul when news like this breaks, but man - that is one violent comic. I mean, having somebody's face as a Pizza-topping! i don't think i could stomach an exact adaptation of that!

@SiMan is that because you are a big wimp?. no no no dont worry I am only joking. The Boys comic does touch on some very tough and controversial subject matters. but I dont think its as shocking and controversial as Preacher, Ex Machina and Transmetropolitan. which I think are superb comics btw. but sadly I think they just would be too upsetting to make into films. I so cant wait for the film version of Hack/ Slash & I would love to see a film version of The Luna Brother's The Sword. but they have already sort of made that into a really good webseries called Destiny of the Journeys starring Marie Lynn and I am still waiting to see a proper film version of HellBlazer to be made into a film as well. :)

So tempting just swear in a 'Scottish' accent and be offensive! But seriously, they need to grow some balls and make this story the way it was written, otherwise you're not making this story. A watered down version without all the grown up stuff just wouldn't be The Boys.
