The Dark Knight Rises will be last Batman film for Christian Bale

Star says he'll hang up the cowl in 2012

The Dark Knight Rises Christian Bale Batman

Christian Bale has announced that The Dark Knight Rises will mark his last time in the cowl and cape... as far as he knows.

'I believe, unless Chris (Nolan) says different, this will be the last time I'm playing Batman.'

Director Christopher Nolan is currently prepping the comic book threequel, which is due to begin filming next year.

Dismissing any rumours or speculation of continuing the series, Bale said he wouldn't believe anything unless it comes from Nolan himself.

"Until Chris tells me, I don't believe it," Bale says. "It's gotta be from his mouth, or else I don't really know.'

The actor, who is currently promoting new film The Fighter, for which he is already attracting Oscar buzz, also claimed to have very little info on the plot of TDKR.

He told MTV News;

'Chris will let me know what I need to know when I need to know it. I probably know a little bit more than some other people out there, but I think most people would be surprised at how little I do know.'

"It just hasn't been necessary yet. I know he'll give me plenty of time to prepare for whatever I need to, and I'll discover it.'

'He's a pretty damn good filmmaker. I trust that he's going to come up with something wonderful.'

The Fighter is out in UK cinemas February 4 2011.

The Dark Knight Rises is set for July 20 2012.

      Ledger, Robert Downey Jr and Christopher Reeves, Bale has brought a comic book character to life on screen in such a way, that I can't see it being topped any time soon. I know that he has been criticised for accentuating his raspy/gravelly Batman voice in TDK (which even though better in BB, I still liked in TDK) and took a backseat to Heath Ledger's runaway performance as The Joker (understandable, Heath was phenomenal) but without Nolan and Bale's take on the character, no one would be interested in seeing the character onscreen again and all anyone would remember of the onscreen Bat franchise is the abomination that was Batman and Robin. However, with that said, once Nolan completes his Bat trilogy with TDKR, I think Bale aswell as Nolan should let that be the final film of their take on the franchise and let another director and star take over and do a different take on the character. Personally I would like to see a Zack Snyder directed The Dark Knight Returns (although now he's directing Superman looks unlikely) with Mickey Rourke as an older Bruce Wayne/Batman in the lead role. I would also like to see a director translate the 90's animated series into a live action film franchise with Jon Hamm donning the cape and cowl.

      My 1st comment had 'along with' cut off the beginning of it for some reason.

      Never like bale as batman, always came across as an a*****e onscreen. He never had that disturbed look in his eyes like keaton had.

      I really hope that after this trilogy they don't touch batman for a while. I think the subject of the Dark Knight needs to rest for a bit and be absorbed. Then if someone else attempts to do Batman again I think they might want to go with one of the later story arcs in the comic series. As we know multiple people are "Batman" in the comic over time. Bruce after all doesn't get any younger. So perhaps fast forward a bit in the comic timeline. Just an idea.
