The Hobbit rumour mill has added District 9’s Neill Blomkamp to its parade of possible directors that already includes David Yates, Brett Ratner and David Dobkin.
Blomkamp's name isn't as far fetched as recent rumours, having worked with producer Peter Jackson on his Oscar-nommed breakout hit District 9.
The fan reaction to Blomkamp's mention has been good, though public and studio opinion still seems to lean heavily toward Jackson himself, who has steadfastly denied he's set to direct.
The production has also been hit by MGM’s well publicised financial difficulties, causing original director Guillermo Del Toro to jump ship.
The Blomkamp rumour is that latest in several similar stories over the past two weeks, probably a case of the studio trying to gauge fan’s reaction to the different directors before they decide who to hire.
So, what do you think Neill Blomkamp could bring to The Hobbit?

Couldn't agree more with zac999. Seriously,Brett Ratner? Why not have Michael Bay direct the second installment? That should sink MGM into oblivion once and for all. But then, who who come to Bonds rescue?

The only person that should direct The Hobbit is Peter Jackson !!

I agree with Ali1748 - now that Guillermo Del Toro is no longer attached Peter Jackson should take this on himself, it's not as if he has anything better on the go at the minute....

..also giving this project to Blomkamp could be a mistake. Big respect to District 9 but someone of his inexperience taking such a huge project on could be akin to David Lynch's problems with Dune.

do you think Peter Jackson was more experienced before he filmed Lord of the Rings than Blomkamp is now?

Peter was more mature when he made L.O.T.R, he some experience under his belt with The Frightners. Niel is still relatively young in director terms, I really don't see him being able to handle a huge project like this. If Peter must insist on letting someone else direct The Hobbit, surely Alfonso Curon or Sam Raimi would be better choices ?

@Kajsmir - yes. With all due respect to neil Blomkamp whom I greatly admire, District 9 is his 1st feature made on a shoestring budget. Eraserhead and The Elephant Man were David Lynch's first 2 feature length movies and yet when confronted with the size of Dune, David Lynch (one of my favourite directors) could not cope. I worry the same may happen here. Before LOTR Peter Jackson had directed at least 5 features. Meet The Feebles, Bad Taste, Brain Dead, The Frightners and heavenly Creatures so in answer to your question, Peter Jackson had an extra 4 features under his belt which makes him undoubtedly more experienced.
