The Joker to return for Batman 3?

"We have to separate the actors from the role"

The Dark Knight producer Chuck Roven has claimed that people need to “separate the actors from the role,” in response to a question regarding The Joker and Heath Ledger.

When asked by MTV whether the filmmakers would have done anything different had they known Ledger wouldn’t be reprising the role, Roven claimed that the character wasn’t tied to the actor.

“On a personal level, Heath was a friend of mine,” he said at the People’s Choice Awards. “We had worked together before The Dark Knight, but I still think that The Dark Knight is its own thing, and we have to separate them.”

Roven also claimed that Christopher Nolan and David Goyer are “talking and thinking” about the next film.

Question: Who could possibly take over The Joker role for Batman 3?

Sounds more like Roven just wants to get people talking about the possibility - free advertising anyone?

Javier Bardem was being pitched first time round or give it to an unknown and then there will be no pre-conceptions or just move the hell on and get new villians...........Lets get a real gritty riddler in and have batman be a true detective trying to solve the riddles. If Dark Knight was a crime film then make the next one a suspense mystery. Just a thought

My vote goes to Michael Shannon, who plays John Givings in Revolutionary Road. His performance is essentially Heath's Joker without the make-up. He'd be perfect.

Spoiler Alert! I think it would be too weird to have somebody else play the Joker in a Christopher Nolan incarnation. It was a pretty big insult to Ledger that the Joker survived at the end of the movie. Considering the intelligence he had behind the madness, the only way we'd believe Gotham had been saved would be if the Joker had died in the film. So it was a bit of an anti-climax. Does anybody else worry that the 3rd (or 7th) film will be ruined by Studio interfernce?

It needs to be a complete re-invention of the character again, obviously. That version of the character is Ledger's own and an imitation would not be accepted. Also could any of you honestly sit through another Batman film featuring the Joker and not compare to Ledger's performance? With so many more possibilities with Chris Nolan still at the helm the Joker character should maybe be laid to rest for now.

Conorm, I hope your jopking, the final scene summed up the relationship between Batman and the Joker pefectly, The two are suppossed to meet again and again. I dont think there should be a Joker in the next film, Overuse of a character or characters is never good (Mr Lecter).

In comics, artists and writers on any given book are changing all the time. Why not do the same with comic-book movies? As long as the actor gives a good performance and the film makers don't mess it up, then it shouldn't matter. As long as it doesn't turn in to Batman Forever, which I don't see Christopher Nolan being capable of. The franchise is in safe hands for the moment

The only reason Roven wants the Joker back is because he's linking TDK's success to the character - which is a huge mistake. Despite Ledger being exceptional all the actors did a good job in that film (I for one believe that Eckhart and Oldman have been unfairly overlooked)so as long as there are good characters with good performances there will be no need to bring back the Clown Prince of Crime. How about a gritty and twisted potrayal of the Riddler played by, I dunno, Johnny Depp or James McAvoy?

It would be a terrible idea to make another Batman movie after The Dark Knight. It was a masterpiece that could never be remade. Most of this is attributed to Heath Ledger, who not only created the best Joker in the franchises history, but created one the best performances of the decade. Of course there will inevitably be a 3rd Batman (it made over a billion dollars world wide, like their not going to make another !) but to bring back the Joker ? I pity the actor who will have play him after Heath.

If another actor is cast to play the Joker, the charcter will have to be very different from Heath Ledger's version. Would prefer to see this: The Riddler starring in the next film, and the apparent death/disappearance of the Joker at the start of the movie. Batman has flashbacks of the Joker... some nice twisted black and white nightmary stuff. A new? villain appears who has the same twisted tendencies of the joker, could it be the joker isn't dead/gone? Eventually Batman figures out it isn't the Joker, but his ghost (not literally) could be felt in the background throughout the film. Also I think throwing in that accomplice, jokers sidekick, i forget her name... to avenge the jokers death/incarceration... and get into batman's heart after death of Rachel. cue some vicious treachery, backstabbing and love. And riddles! haha think I'll forward this to Warner! ;)

in my view dont bring back the joker go in a new direction have that same darkness and intensity of the dark knight but think HUSH yeah i said it let them make batman hush the best batman comic ever of course need some work doing to it like the removal of certain villains that may over crowd the plot but the story was amazing i loved it so lets do that.

I'd love to see a Nolan Riddler in the 3rd film, but something in me craves for Nolan to adapt Mask of the Phantasm the animated movie, that was awesome!

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is a name that has cpme up here, other sites, and even in a few conversations with friends. I haven't see Michael Shannon in Revolutionary Road, but he is a good actor. Both could pull off The Joker. I really don't see why Ledger has to be the only Joker we ever see. He was great in the role, other people could be great, too.

jospeh gordon levitt would be awesome. however I think it would be a mistake to include the Joker, he has become the most iconic film character of this century so far (this incarnation of him i mean) and to be reprised by another actor might ruin the character through comparison alone, whether or not the actor was good at it. I think the joker would have to be taken in a completely different direction to make it work, which would only interupt the franchise so far. personally I'd like to see one old villain reinvented, like The Riddler, and one or two brand new villains thrown in to the mix.

In response to conorm you missed the point of the movie. the movie wasn't about the joker it was about batman and the fact that Batman would not kill that he wouldn't fall (or rise) to the Jokers level. that in fact gotham could not fully be saved rather only be salvaged barely and with great sacrifice. While the joker was great he was not what made the movie amazing. Momento was an amazing movie, Prestige was an amazing movie, Nolan pulled off the movie, don't get me wrong it was a great performance but a better sequel can be made because the dark knight wasn't perfect. now can anyone pull off a better joker than ledger maybe maybe not.

i recon if warner or chris had to use the joker again it would have to be in the next installment simply cos Bale might not sign up for the 4th if they tried to bring him beck then because he seems to realy dislike being second place to the charachter. Joseph Gordon-Levitt or Michael Shannon would be brilliant + they could have him mashed up by the guards at Arkym Asylum because he killed all there buddies missing an eye or what have you, loads more scars to make the transition better and more believable as the joker. no riddles or chocolate covered biscuits, that would spoil the lot and they might as well bring in robin. what ever Mr Nolan does go with, you can guarentee it'll be quality ! ! !

In response to ThrashGordon, the Joker's sidekick is called Harley Quinn. In the comics they met in Arkam Asylum, so the Joker character would almost certainly have to be reprised to make any sense of why his accomplace has appeared. And in response to rolfaroo43, bringing back Robin would be the end of the Batman franchise.

These comments show that the joker was going to a major part of the third film, and they are still determined to use him. i think the riddler is a must, he would fit perfectly into Nolans vision of Gotham, a criminal mastermind who wants to test batman to the limit, and did anyone think that that end thing with the two ferries wasnt like the joker? it had more of the riddler about it..as long as we aren't heading towards another Spiderman 3

During the many times that I have watched The Dark Knight, I keep visualizing Giovanni Ribisi playing the part of The Joker. He is one actor that has a wide scope of ability. Being in such films as Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, Cold Mountain, and the remake of Flight of the Phoenix.

Johnny Depp can pull it off. next to pacino he is one of the greatest character actors ever. with the joker in the asylum he could under go differnt drug exposure changin his mannerisms slightly. the joker did not look like heath ledger in make up, so the make up can change to a different style. im a bit p****d of that they wasted the character harvey dent. he could of carried a whole film himself.Dont bring in robin or bat girl. that wat made the first set of movies go off coarse.

The Joker could and probably should cameo in the next film, but not play a major role. He could be a puppet master of sorts or someone that Batman/ Gotham PD questions in regards to other criminals or something. I dont know. As far as the Riddler, I think that character must be in the next film; I dont want to see Catwoman, thats for sure. As far as who should play the role, you all are gonna hang me for saying this, how about Leo DeCaprio? Think about it...huge name, which is something the studio wants to follow up Ledger and very versitile actor, he can play any role, I for one would enjoy seeing him play that character. As a secondary option for the Riddler, how about Hugo Weaving??? Not as big a name but every bit the actor and makes an awesome villain (See Matrix Movies).

My two cents, Dont get out the nuce and pitchforks yet, how about Leo DeCaprio for Riddler. Think about it, versitile actor, big name, just like the studio execs want, he could pull it off; I would enjoy seeing him play that role. Secondary pick, Hugo Weaving. Not a big name yet, but still awesome villain ( see Matrix movies).

ledger's performance can never be topped. He was exceptional. But so was Jack Nicholson. Bring in Black skull as a villain. Someone who targets Bruce Wayne not Batman, or Kane(???) who nearly kills batman in the comic, for a more emotional story arc, let Christian Bale get the headlines. Leave the Joker be, at least until the time comes when whoever follows Ledger doesnt have to contend with the hysteria at the minute.
