The Spider-Man musical has a title

And an opening date…

BY Total Film Feb 25th 2009 6:06AMFILED UNDER: Movie news

Julie Taymor’s long-gestating Spider-Man musical will be known as Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark when it opens in New York on 18th February next year.

Costing $31 million (nice and pricey for a stage musical, then), the show will feature music from U2’s Bono and the Edge.

There’s no word on exactly what the plot will be yet  - we’re guessing from that title it’s either a clash with a big, nasty villain or a stirring warning about the dangers of dark matter as alternative fuel – but Taymor at least now has a date she’s working towards.

What she doesn’t yet have is a solid, locked cast. Evan Rachel Wood has said that she’s nabbed the role of Mary Jane Watson, and while she and Across The Universe co-star Jim Sturgess have been playing MJ and Peter Parker, no one has been officially cast.

Taymor’s been working out the kinks on this one for a while now – it hasn’t always gone smoothly, but then with such a big, high-pressure show, problems are always to be expected.

Given that this is the director who made The Lion King work so well on stage, it has a good chance of being spectacular…

When the movie came out, EVERYBODY in the audience was wishing it had been a musical instead.
Stan Lee must be spinning in his... multimillion dollar mansion.
