The Women arriving at last

Meg Ryan leads the cast in a long-developing comedy remake

Girls. Don’t they always take ages to get ready? Okay, slipping off the Seinfeld mask for a moment and quitting with the clichés, it’s all in aid of the fact that writer-director Diane English has managed to do what has long thought impossible – getting a remake of 1939’s The Woman into actual production.

Well, let’s not count our chickens just yet – the film has a 6th August start date and apparent commitments from the likes of Meg Ryan, Annette Bening, Eva Mendes, Jada Pinkett Smith and Debra Messing to star in a movie about catty female friends who discover that the friend they envy most has a cheating husband.

But thanks to an affordable $20million budget, it appears that English will finally get The Women before cameras, after the idea bounced around Hollywood for more than a decade. It’s been attached to the likes of James L Brooks and Julia “I get first pick of everything!” Roberts and slipped through the hands of at least two studios.

At the rate this movie is hoovering up the actresses in town, other films will end up forcing the likes of Tobey Maguire to don dresses and play the female roles. And nobody wants that.
