Though he spends a lot of his time suckling at the Disney money teat, Tim Allen appears ready to stretch himself with some edgier, more independent work.

Fresh from working on David Mamet’s martial arts drama Redbelt, Allen has signed up to join the cast of The Six Wives Of Henry Lefay. It’s the tale of a charismatic salesman presumed dead after he goes missing on a skydiving trip. But when his daughter (Elisha Cuthbert) arrives home to arrange the funeral, she finds his current missus and the five previous wives battling over who gets to bury him. Paz Vega, Andie MacDowell, Kelli Garner and S Epatha Merkerson are already starring in the comedy, which Howard Gould has written and will direct next month in Connecticut.
