He’s been umming and aahing for months now, but Tom Cruise looks to have all but locked down his next job – action comedy Wichita.
James Mangold is at the helm for the pic, which will co-star Cameron Diaz, who he last worked with on Vanilla Sky (below).
The script, which has been through several drafts in its time (with Mangold and Shutter Island scribe Laeta Kalogridis polishing even now), focuses on a single woman (Diaz) whose life is endlessly disrupted by Cruz’ secret agent.
Both of the stars have now signed off on the movie, and are in the final negotiation stage, so Fox, which is bankrolling the thing, will likely start looking for a release date – possibly as early as next summer.
It’s been a long slog for the Cruiser post-Valkyrie: he’s been waiting to make his choice from several projects and it apparently went down to the wire between this and Len Wiseman’s presidential action thriller Motorcade.
Cruise apparently hasn’t ruled out tackling that one also, but it looks like Wichita is officially first on his schedule.

In a word-yes. Cruise has been one of my favorites for a long time and Jerry Maguire is the high point of his career. Make the surefire big budget crowd pleaser and then do the much smaller personal project (Magnolia) and finally win that Oscar.
