Tom Cruise officially signs on to play Jack Reacher in One Shot

It'll shoot before sci-fi Oblivion

It's now official folks: Tom Cruise will star as Jack Reacher in a movie adapted from Lee Child's book series, Deadline has announced.

When the idea was mooted a few weeks back, it was met with ire by many fans of the book series, who couldn't accept the thought of Cruise playing the 6'5" tough guy.

Expect this news to receive something of a backlash, although Child (the pen name of author Jim Grant) commended the casting, saying: "Reacher's size in the books is a metaphor for an unstoppable force, which Cruise portrays in his own way."

Christopher McQuarrie, director of The Way Of The Gun and screenwriter of The Usual Suspects and Valkyrie, will helm this adaptation.

One Shot is one of 15 Jack Reacher novels written by Child, so there's certainly franchise potential here.

It also looks like One Shot will shoot before Cruise goes on to star in Oblivion, a science fiction epic from Joseph TRON: Legacy Kosinski.

While Jack Reacher will be a demanding role for Cruise, it could mark a significant new stage in his career if he pulls it off.

Cruise will next be seen in Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, and he's currently shooting musical Rock Of Ages, so his recent taste in roles has been nothing if not diverse; is a full-blown comeback in the offing?

Gutted that Cruise has officially been cast as Reacher? Or quietly hopeful that he'll be able to pull it off? Tell us what you think!

Ridiculous news, wonder how much they paid Jim Grant to say that! surely he can't be happy wth this ridiculous casting. I like the cruise missile as much as anyone but not playing Jack Reacher!!

This decision has left me, almost, speechless! It is breathtaking in its absurdity! Perhaps, one day, someone in the film industry will pick up a book and actually read it, from cover to cover. I would like to see Lee Child intervene, if possible, to veto this insane decision.

oh come on.....it's like a Hobbit playing Superman. I have followed the 'Jack Reacher' books from the beginning and like most other females who have read them have a soft spot for good old Jack. I always wondered when they would start to make the films of the books and eagerly awaited their arrival, not any more, I can't think of anyone more miscast than the little man, I have kids bigger than him for goodness sake. Come on Mr Grant be the man you write about and stand up to them.

I can't believe this is actually happening. This is possibly the worst casting decision in the history of film. I also can't believe what Jim Grant said. Yes, his size is a metaphor, but it's also very real and integral to who Jack Reacher is. I'm furious. How about this for future projects Tom.. Rhea Perlman as Sara Linton in a big screen adaption of Karin Slaughter's Fractured. Jason Statham as Dean Koontz's Odd Thomas Paul Daniels and Debbie McGee as Lehane's Kenzie and Gennaro

This is the most moronic thing I have ever, ever heard. In trip wire reacher gets shot and the bullet doesn't go through his skull as the layers of muscle stop it.... could tom cruise do that... could he???? No! Lets do a little reacher test Is TC blonde - No 6 5' - NO Blue eyes - No in any way at all like reacher - no! Call me crazy but I'd prefer to see Channing Tatum in the role... At least he fits the description!

seen this coming for ages.like most of you,ive been a reacher fan from killing floor.casting someone for the reacher role was always going to a hard job,but tom cruise?has he even read a book, let alone a reacher novel?this movie will flop, and the chance for a future movie with someone better will never happen.cant wait to see cruise pull off a DONT FU*K WITH ME STARE.would be funny if it wasnt so tragic

I agree with writerdave87.... no way is Jack Reacher's size a metaphor as it is described in great detail in nearly every novel (His height is always on his CV put at the beginning of every book) and is an integral part of the character. Reacher can handle himself but is in no way a ninja which is what Top Cat will have to become to pull off the toughness of Reacher ... Where would we have been if JK Rowling had the same sycophantic attitude to Harry Potter ... Hogwarts in New York played by the cast of Glee ...... Watch Dwayne Johnson in Walking Tall and Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible and you will know who fits the bill straight away.....

Comes down to money, plain and simple, the Tom Cruise brand has bought this role, not his suitability for it. Not saying he's a bad actor, just not right for Jack Reacher. There's so much about Reacher's physical shape being influencial, plus Reacher goes out of his way to blend into the background, you can spot Tom a mile off in any film, even when he's wearing prosthetics. Thinking off the top of my head, the role should've gone to someone like Gerard Butler.

They can't be serious no way could Tom Cruise ever embody Jack Reacher. It's like asking for a horse and getting a my little pony instead. They should have got an unknown to play Reacher it would have added to the mystery of him as a character we didn't need any preconceptions of what an actor is like. Book adaptions are risky normally but to f*** it up like this is unforgiveable. Lee Child has so many fans but I can guarantee so many of them will refuse to see it due to this stupid casting!
