Tom Cruise to play Jack Reacher in One Shot?

He’s in talks to star for Christopher McQuarrie

Tom Cruise is in talks to star as Jack Reacher in Christopher McQuarrie’s adaptation of One Shot, according to a report by Deadline.

One Shot is one of 15 Jack Reacher novels by British author Lee Child. The popular character is a military-man-turned-drifter, who wanders across the US getting tangled up in various crimes.

Christopher McQuarrie is best known as a screenwriter (he penned The Usual Suspects and Cruise’s Valkyrie), and this will be his first time in the director’s chair since the underrated The Way Of The Gun in 2000.

Cruise is a potentially controversial choice for Reacher, a stoic tough-guy who’s 6’5” and built like a tank.

It could be difficult for audiences to buy the iconic movie star as an intimidating hard man, but if he pulls it off, it could be an invaluable reinvention to launch him into a new phase in his career.

The actor is certainly keeping himself busy with an admirably varied bunch of blockbusters: having finished work on Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, he’s currently shooting musical Rock Of Ages.

He’s also committed to sci-fi epic Oblivion for TRON: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski.

If he signs for One Shot, it’s expected to go before the cameras ahead of Oblivion.

Can you see Cruise as Jack Reacher? Or did you have another actor in mind for the character? Talk to us below…

The fail... oh dear god the sheer, unbelievable, moronic fail of this casting. This is even worse than casting Morgan Freeman as Alex Cross. If Cruise becomes Reacher, goodbye to most of the book's fanbase going to see it. Give it to Tom Jane, or John Corbett.

Oh my sweet lords, what are they thinking? I'd rather watch a Jack Reacher film starring Goldberg than his royal weirdness Tom Cruise

He's too old, not tall enough, too hollywood good looking, and doesn't look like he could take down special forces if he had to. I might have forgiven them casting someone like Statham, Reacher's a man of few words, but I honestly thought that this was ripe for a relatively unknown cast.

Are they out of their bloody minds??? Cruise is nearly a foot shorter than Jack Reacher and hardly the build to make everybody think twice about taking him on. The guy is meant to be the proverbial "Brick S*** House"!!!! HOW ARROGANT to think that because you're a "Superstar" you can ride roughshod over a story line and completely change a character. Lee Child must be LIVID!!!! I know I am!

Why does Hollywood think throwing Tom Cruise into a film always guarantees a boxoffice hit? The guy is way pass his prime (ie. Knight and Day) and whatever charisma he once had is gone. A little guy like Cruise as Jack Reacher is total nonsense. Bah!

Ray Stevenson fits the bill. Cruise could play Plato if they adapt 61 hours.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! AAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! JACK REACHER....TOM CRUISE....AHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! AHHHH, there'll be another cruise movie i wont be watching. you would think people with the kind of money they have, could create...well simply, good movies. the Lee Child books are simply easy readers, nothing heavy, perfect for plane rides, to actually put a face to the figure is stupid in its self, not alone making it a pretty midjets face..... the best idea would to not film it altogther, as it will ruin a fantasy image for the reader...but if you really really really want to ruin these (only pleasent) reads for the sake of a money and a memory of "remember that terrible reacher movie with tom cruise", then go for it.... i will enjoy seeing tom cruise in high heels and padding so he can for fill the role of the 6,5ft coke machine built cold tough guy....still i digress, HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH AHHHHHHHHHHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA AAHHHHH the crappy coggs of industry.
