Tom Cruise to star in Magnificent Seven remake?

MGM have another classic in their sights…

MGM are thought to have their latest remake in their sights, with Variety reporting that Tom Cruise is set to star in a new version of The Magnificent Seven.

The film is the latest in  a long line of remakes currently in the works at the studio, with versions of Carrie, Poltergeist and RoboCop all at various stages in the production process.

Cruise himself is also on a remake tip at present, with this latest news coming hot on the heels of the announcement that he will star in Universal's forthcoming Van Helsing remake. Cruise has apparently been a long-standing fan of The Magnificent Seven, although he's thought to be waiting for the film to be greenlit before officially signing on.

The original film (itself a remake of Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai) tells the story of a group of gunslingers hired by a village of Mexican peasants to run off a marauding gang of banditos. Yul Brynner, Charles Bronson and Steve McQueen headed up the all-star cast.

No word as yet on release dates or further casting, but MGM will look to get this one off the ground as soon as possible so as to secure a spot in Cruise's busy schedule. Time to start assembling those fantasy ensembles...

This was talked about around 15 years ago. Willis was being mooted for the Yul Bryner role. I say go for it! Plenty of names out there that would be suited to the movie; Brolin, Gosling, Hardy...

This should definitely happen though i'm not sure Cruise is right for the leader role (would he really take any other role?). needs to be someone older, wiser, less s**t eating smugness. Anthony Hopkins...?

Tom Cruise is a GREAT actor (Magnolia, Jerry Maguire, etc). i just dont see him giving orders to the guys shaunrb mentioned (Gosling would be PERFECT for the James Coburn role). Also as you have been pointed out yourself Dabion, this story has been remade countless times and it should be remade again with the right talent. i could totally go for a modern day version with Gosling, Hardy, etc the original will always remain untouchable.

I'm not averse to this one weirdly, although will they have it as a period western or modernise it? Either way it could conceivably be a lot of fun if they do it right..Tom hardy playing the 'Chico' role, Javier Bardem as Bernardo or the villain, Gosling can stay, Chris Pine might do for the mcqueen role, clive owen as lee and lose the pointless Harry character or possibly retool it-he didnt have enough to do in the western 'original'.

could be good if they get the right mix of actors, some mentioned above would be great like timothy olyphant, nathan filliion, ryan gosling & tom hardy some others i'd like to see would be eric bana, ben foster, ed harris, brendan gleeson, sam rockwell, bradley cooper, kevin durand & jeremy renner tbh the list is endless of talent to use

I think Gosling for the James Coburn role with Tom Hardy for he Steve McQueen one, maybe Brolin for the Charles Bronson character with Fassbender in there somewhere for good measure. Christian Bale being in the lead role would also be awesome! As far as the bad guy goes I'm with '2Dglasses' on Javier Bardem, or maybe even changing it up and using Daniel Day-Lewis, Brad Pitt or Jeff Bridges who I think would be good in a bad guy role in a western, To be honest the list of options would be endless.

This is what happens when you allow Tom Cruise to listen to Bon Jovi's Wanted Dead Or Alive on his ipod.

Ok guys this is getting a little worrying. He wants a guy to die because of his religious beliefs. Plus he wants to "beat the living f**king s**t" out of a guy who is "crippled in a wheelchair". He also thinks it would be hilarious. I remember when I said Lindsay Lohan had little to no acting abilities then TKOC went on a tirade of how we are all misogynistic pigs etc etc. whilst he can go on to say things like he deserves to have his face kicked in, deserves to die and wishes him to be crippled in a wheelchair so he can beat the hell out of him. Pot. Kettle. Black.??

You really are a disgusting little rodent aren't you. You claim to be 'sticking up for people' and now you're going off on how you wish someone was crippled so you could beat them up? Although I did like the fact you're the same height as Cruise. So now you're short as well as being a fat bald little hateful toad.

Er... having a problem with you saying you'd beat up someone in a wheelchair is hardly 'sticking up for Tom Cruise'. It doesn't matter who it is, you're still a foul little inbred troll for saying it.

@MrBigDab the violence you talk of is disturbing in the extreme but FFS if you dont like Tom Cruise or the potential of this movie why on earth did you even bother to comment in the first place? and your opinions do not represent anybody else on these boards. at all.

I don't particularly like Tom Cruise as a person but g*****n it.. he is so watchable. Saw Ghost protocol the other night.. cracking film. I'd watch most things with him in it (apart from Rock of Ages as I don't like musicals). Do not feed the trolls!

i dont mind him, didnt like alot of his early films like (days of thunder & Top Gun), but overall i've enjoyed most of his films. I cant see him in a western though... but to be fair im sure people wouldnt have thought he could pull off Les Grossman in Tropic Thunder either

To be honest I quite like Tom Cruise, you can't deny the dedication to his work, as Simon Pegg stated, he came into help Pegg with his lines, even when he didn't need to. You wouldn't get that from the likes of Russell Crowe. Plus anyone who can scale one of the worlds tallest buildings on wires, has to have g*nads the size of coconuts! Fairplay.
