Tom Hanks will be Major Matt Mason

Based on another Mattel toy

Clearly figuring that a man who has some experience playing a toy can help a franchise based on one, Universal is developing Mattel’s Major Matt Mason into a film for Tom Hanks.

Hanks will produce the film via his Playtone company and if he likes the script – which regular collaborator Graham Yost is writing – he’ll commit to star.

And Mason? Little known in the UK, the Major Matt Mason line was based around a heroic astronaut and his team who work on the moon and live in a space station.

Unsurprisingly, it was a big hit across the pond when the Apollo missions were gearing up, but was removed from production in 1970 once NASA actually got a man wandering around the place.

Yost and Hanks have a little background with the subject – they worked together on From The Earth To The Moon. Oh, and Hanks owns some of the toys. Sounds everyone wants this thing to happen.
