Despite boasting a prime example of dream casting in the form of Angelina Jolie, the first two Tomb Raider films were largely derided as one-paced misfires boasting little or no invention whatsoever.
For that precise reason, there have been relatively few complaints aimed towards the franchise reboot proposed by Hugo producer Graham King. He’s currently working on a new Tomb Raider script alongside Iron Man writers Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, and recently updated Comingsoon.net on how the project was progressing.
“Listen, the box office, they weren't disasters,” says King of the first two, “but I find it interesting that the story that we're telling is really the story before she became Lara Croft. So it is a character piece.”
“It does have a lot of really great characters,” he continued, “but it's a lot of action and a lot of fun, and for me, it's something very different. I've not really done a movie like that before, but I really gravitated to rebooting this franchise and we're going to give it a shot.”
And while audiences aren’t exactly crying out for a new Tomb Raider movie, our feeling is that this can only be an improvement on previous outings, particularly given the calibre of people involved at this stage.
The project is still in its infancy, but expect rumours to start circulating as to the identity of the next Lara Croft, sooner rather than later.
