Universal eye Rob Cohen for The Mummy 3

The xXx director is in the frame to continue the franchise...

Despite the fact that The Mummy Returns and its sister picture The Scorpion King are still taught in schools as how not to make a film, Universal are gearing up for another instalment to the franchise – and they want Rob Cohen in the director’s chair.

But don’t worry, Van Helsing helmer Stephen Sommers, who created the series, will still be involved, producing alongside Sean Daniel, Jim Jacks and Bob Ducsay.

Adrenaline junkie Cohen has screamed down the megaphone for such flicks as The Fast And The Furious, xXx and Stealth, so we imagine The Mummy 3 will have the odd action scene in it.

It’s one of a series of sequels and remakes Universal are currently pinning their hope badges to – including Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy 2, The Wolf Man starring Benicio Del Toro and Meet The Little Focker, which we’re praying is as good as Look Who’s Talking.

The Mummy 3 is being targeted for a 2008 release. As yet it has not been confirmed whether Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz will return.
