Watchmen now shorter

Zack Snyder’s current cut is 2 hours and 35 mins

Despite earlier attempts by director Zack Snyder to keep Watchmen around 2 hours and 45 minutes, he’s had to edit the film down a little.

Don’t panic, though – it’s not like an hour will be missing. "We're getting really close," producer Deborah Snyder tells Sci Fi. "We're at two hours and 35 minutes."

Though the Snyders have a shared passion to keep the film as long as possible, it looks like the studio wants them to keep on slicing.

Closer to the graphic novel

"The movie's pretty long ... compared to 300, which was an hour and 58 minutes,” says Zack. The director's cut of Watchmen is about three hours and 10 minutes long. It has even more than the theatrical version as far as the detail that gets even closer to the graphic novel."

And then there are the other DVD versions promised to keep us all happy.

"The Black Freighter version of the movie that we're working on- which has the ins and outs of the Black Freighter comic book woven through it via animation - will be about three hours and 40 minutes. So there's a huge epic version of Watchmen, which will probably come out after the movie's theatrical release, for hardcore fans."

The more the merrier, we say…

Hate to say it, but it all sounds like hot water. Or worse still, taking fans for a ride. If he really knew what he wanted to do with it, there would only be one version. Does it really need to have a version close to 4 frickin' hours?

I think it warrants a director's cut at least. If he's pressured to cut down from his original vision I think it's fair enough to release his own at a later date...though 4 hours is definitely pushing it IMO, all the Watchmen fans I've heard seems to think that it can't be done properly without it being hella long, so whatever...

If he wants to keep as close to the original novel it sounds like it needs to be 4 hrs. But the studio wants to keep it shorter, 'cause to them is all about profit. The shorter it is - the more times they can show it pr. day.

I really don't think the theatrical version matters. Screen size is the last of my concerns. If we're getting a three-ten long director's cut, then a full Black Freighter version at about 3:30 on DVD, then I really don't care about the theatrical version. Hell, if the full 3:30 version came out at the same time as the cinema release, I'd skip the cinema release. Would be nice to see at least a limited run of the full version at cinemas, but I don't think it's really necessary. The DVD versions of films are infinitely more important to me than the theatrical versions anyway, and that a crazy long version of Watchmen is coming to DVD is just awesome. I just hope it's good.
