Whedon almost set for The Avengers

In final negotiations with Marvel...

In a case of terrible timing around April Fool’s Day this year, reports teasingly linked Buffy creator Joss Whedon with Marvel’s The Avengers flick.

But what was assumed to be a mean-spirited joke (we hate April Fool’s!), has actually turned out to be a piece of legitimate news, and an amazing win for fanboys everywhere if it all pans out.

Deadline report that Whedon is officially in final negotiations to helm the Avengers film for Marvel. Beyond that, few details are available, with the negotiations in that delicate phase inbetween giving Whedon a pen and then getting him to scribble away a few years of his life.

Whedon’s not had much luck with the big screen – his Buffy movie was savaged, he wasn’t happy with how his Alien: Resurrection script was directed, and his (awesome) Serenity failed to make enough money to warrant a franchise revival. Meanwhile, his Wonder Woman adap never made it out the door.

Hopefully The Avengers will put that all to rights (c'mon, if anybody needs any vengeance here, it's Whedon).

With all three main players – Iron Man, Thor and Captain America – cast in their own respective projects, it’s easy to see why Marvel are keen to lock them all in for The Avengers as soon as possible.

And we can’t think of anybody we’d rather helm that adventure.

Can you?

"Whedon’s not had much luck with the big screen" Except being nominated for an Oscar for his work on Toy Story and for a while back there being one of the most in-demand script doctors around - Speed, X-Men etc... - and Serenity moving into serious profit on home rental markets, and having Cabin In The Woods in the pipeline, yeah, he hasn't had much success. Oh and toresimonsen, let it go! I loved the show, but it was canceled. It was also taken to very end of the line by Wheden and his writers. Goddam, did you not watch the final few episodes? They wrapped it up! There isn't anywhere else for the story to go, and that was a conscious decision by Wheden. It's over. Deal with it! Now, bringing back Firefly is another thing altogether...

From a comic fanboy perspective, Wheden has the upmost respect of Marvel after rejuvenating the X-Men comic franchise in recent years. He proved he was in tune with the characters and is a longtime Marvel reader. Therefore it's not a surprise that he's been offered a stab and creating a franchise that already has the groundwork in place. Perhaps his original works have been lacking the big impact required for box office success but Marvel have just given him the biggest sandbox to go to town in! I'm looking forward to seeing him honor the franchise story-wise, and letting Marvel Studios show him how big they can bang the bucks visually.

Ok i dont know much about this whedon dude but it sounds like he's had some rough luck n Marvel seem to be taking a big risk with this guy, however every dog has his day n maybe he can appreciate his failures and come up with some real quality, so give him a chance......although it does worry me, what worry's me more however is the absense of talk surrounding Hulk!!!!! Get Norton to get his a*s in gear, call Marvel, i dont care i wanna see the green dude bring a different balance to the Avengers............... Stark was in iron man, so make it count!!! Plus i think it was Letterier that said that if he helmed the Avengers that he would make Hulk the villan...... not sure i like that, id like to see Bana control the hulk but lose it when need be......not turn him into a villain...........

He must be mental this is a poison chalice if ever there was one and it'll never match fanboy expectation.

The good news is that Whedon has been signed up...the bad news is that the sequel's been cancelled.

Great news and I'm so over Serenity fan(atic)s going on about the film, the excellent film, making profit on home sales and rentals. The article says not much on the BIG SCREEN! It didn't make any money in cinemas, moreover it lost so much that it was pulled from several countries, theatrically and turned into a straight to DVD movie. It's a very good film and another example of how some very good / entertaining movies just don't get seen when films that "look" good, or have a built in fan base like Clash of The Titans make more money in their North American, opening weekends than the likes of Serenity make worldwide all told. With Favreau producing and Wheddon directing, script doctoring / writing, There's a lot of hope for The Avengers. Now all we need is for someone to sweet talk the notoriously stubborn Edward Norton into returning as Banner and we can have much better movie than one where we just have the Hulk there with minimal intelligence and no alter ego. Wheddon writing some decent dialogue and working with Downey Jnr may be enough to bring him back. Of course giving him a Hulk sequel where they make more use of him as an actor (not knocking the Incredible Hulk it was good and you can see why Marvel NEEDED a greater action to drama ratio after Hulk split / bored audiences, and the reams of drama cut from the movie and on the Blu-ray shows why Norton seemed to think he'd been cheated out of a slightly more "worthy" film. With The Avengers not due until 2012 there's even time to get a Hulk movie out as the direct lead in to The Avengers.
