Will Doctor Strange appear in Thor: The Dark World?

And could he be played by Viggo Mortensen?

A nice, juicy bit of superhero gossip for you this morning, with online reports suggesting that Doctor Strange may be due for a cameo in Thor: The Dark World, with the man playing him none other than Viggo Mortensen.

The rumour stems from a Twitter account registered to one Roger Wardell who previously leaked the news that Falcon would be appearing in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, as well as confirming Sebastian Stan's return as Bucky Barnes.

Now he has dropped a pair of new tidbits that may well be interconnected. "Inside News: There’s something “Strange” about Thor: The Dark World" reads the first tantalising tweet.

"Inside News: Marvel is negotiations with Viggo Mortensen for an unspecified role in one of their Phase 2 films” claims the second.

Even accepting that the intel is reliable, there's nothing to definitively say that the two tweets are interrelated, but that hasn't stopped fans working themselves into a right old lather over the prospect of Mortensen taking on the role of Strange.

A Doctor Strange movie has been rumoured for years… could this be the first step towards seeing that dream realised? We'll find out for sure when Thor: The Dark World opens in the UK on 8 November 2013.

Would Viggo be a good pick for Doctor Strange? Tell us, below!

With Hulk already established it could well open the door for a Defenders movie as well... Falcon, appearing in the next Cap movie; was once a member and it would be easy enough to have Strange as the end of credits cameo while introducing Valkyrie as one of Thor's allies in Dark World. All you really need to do is set up a Namor film and you've got the Defenders: Hulk, the Sub-Mariner and the Sorcerer Supreme backed up by the Falcon and Valkyrie. And let''s be honest, Namor would be easier to set up than Aquaman.

@ ChrisWooton - the rule in comic books used to be that "no one stays dead except Uncle Ben and Bucky". Then they brought Bucky back.

@Chris - I guess you haven't read any recent comic books? I'm one to talk as I'm a closet comic book reader.

I haven't read a comic book since Preacher. I was going purely by the film.. he died in the film didn't he? I can't quite remember because I thought it was s**t.

Viggo would be perfect! Though I think he deserves a larger part with more screentime and badass action and lines. He is larger than life, the movie world should not treat him like some fixture you take out and use only from time to time.

@Chris - your right on both counts. He died and Captain America was sh#t. I wrote in the TF forum that it was one of the few films I've ever walked out on. It was just soooo boring. That said Marvel needs to do something special with Dr. Strange. He is one of those characters who can easily solve a problem with a spell zapping out all dramatic tension.

Ah, ok cool.. thanks for the feedback. Yeah CaptainCrazy, it was the weakest of all the Marvel movies which is a shame because they had a decent villain and the first half an hour was pretty good.

Doctor Strange would be an excellent addition to the Marvel film universe, offering something a little different. Viggo would be awesome in the role, i just hope that Marvel handle the amount of characters coming in just right. I think it would be cool if characters appeared in different franchises, but i hope they don't try to include everyone who's been on screen into one of the ensemble films, like Avengers 2 & 3. You would be left with too many having nothing to do in a picture.

Also, i think Viggo would make an excellent Roland in the Dark Tower adaptation.

This sound like good news, it could be like a good version of the Sorcerer's Apprentice or something and Mortensen is strong actor. I just hope Wasp is in Ant-man and they bring Ms. Marvel into the MCU at some point. It's a bit of a sausage fest at the moment and if there's anything Whedon knows how to do correctly it's strong female characters although I'm pretty sure they might want to stay away from the whole Hank hitting Janet thing, it might not go down too well.

These days if Hank did hit her, she'd turn around and kick his a*s.... besides I always liked Pym better in his Hornet incarnation. He was still a feminine hygiene product but Hornet and Wasp was a cool thematic pairing.
