Will Ferrell explains Anchorman 2 fall-out

Why it didn’t get made

Will Ferrell has talked in depth for the first time about his disappointment that Anchorman 2 was shelved.

Speaking with Collider, the comedy chameleon confirmed that the sequel never saw the light of day because the studio just didn’t want to spend any money on it.

“It’s just tough right now to get movies made,” Ferrell says. “It’s just weird because we were basically begged to for years and years like, ‘Would you guys ever do a sequel? Would you ever do a sequel?’ and we finally kind of were feeling it because like every year that movie has sort of built and built and built.

“We warmed up to the idea and we were like, ‘That could actually be a lot of fun.’ And we got everyone together and then they were basically like, ‘Great! We can’t believe it! But you have to do it for this amount.’

“And we were like, ‘Oh, well there’s no way we can do it for that…’”

The actor adds that while he’s no authority on the inner-workings of studio execs' minds, they should have understood that getting top comedians Steve Carell, Paul Rudd and Ferrell himself all in one movie would’ve cost a few dollars.

Want a hint of what might have been? According to Ferrell, Anchorman 2 would have been a musical. Which sounds like ten tons of fun. Shame we’ll never get to see it.

Are you disappointed Anchorman 2 never got made?

First one is a classic. Sequel would be interesting but probably inevetibly turn out s**te (are there any decent comedy sequels?). And as for a musical? Ahh..no thanks.

I wish there were a second one. And that there wasn't a second Zoolander on the cards. Because that WILL blow, now that Stiller's head continues to slip further up his own bumhole. I could see Anchorman 2 being fresh, where that shall be stale.

What a shame, bearing in mind that Anchorman is the best and probabaly the only excellent comedy turn from Ferrell.

It's obviously not that difficult to have movies made as there are so many awful ones-especially in comedies. Many of them unfortunately feature Mr Farrell half naked.

Honestly maybe it's better that the sequel got canned, it would inevitably fail to deliver and never be as great as the first. But couldn't Ferrel,Rudd and Carrel have took a pay cut just to give the fans a treat ? It's not like they struggle to pay they're bills.

They could have made a sequel I guess. I believe that sequels always have a chance to be as good as the original. The ratio of decent sequels to terrible sequels definitely leans towards bad sequels. (Superman 2, Magnum Force, The Godfather part II, For a Few Dollars More and the threequel The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, Toy Story 2 and 3, The Dark Knight). But history shows that comedy sequels are never as good as the original [Airplane! 2, Major League 2, Meet The Fockers, Rush Hour 2 and 3 (although the first wasn't too great either), The Blues Brothers 2000, Any Which Way You Can (Any Which Way But Loose was a rare mistake for Clint Eastwood too)Slap Shot sequels, Revenge of the Nerds sequels and Look Who's Talking 2 and 3]. While I trust Adam McKay and Will Ferrell to make a decent sequel, I'm sure viewers trusted the people who made Airplane! to make a good sequel but Airplane! 2 is very forgettable. I think we should just be happy with the consistently funny collaborations between Adam McKay and Will Ferrell.
