Will Smith won't be back for Independence Day 2

Emmerich's sequel is Smith-less

Will Smith's "will he, won't he?" dance with Independence Day 2 seems to have finally settled on "he won't", with the actor reportedly not reprising his role as fighter pilot Steven Hillier in the upcoming sequel.

Deadline have been "reliably told" by their sources that Smith's officially out, though the sequel is still due to invade cinemas in July 2016, 20 years after the first alien invasion flick.

No word yet on why Smith decided not to return, but director Roland Emmerich probably isn't surprised - he told Daily News last year that Smith would probably be "too expensive" anyway.

Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman will be back, though, this time going up against the evil ETs alongside Ross Bagley, who'll play Smith's grown-up son.

Independence Day 2 opens in cinemas on 4 July 2016.

Glad Smith isn't back? Tell us below...

Probably wanted his own kid to star as the captain's son.

Great news, now go get Jaden Smith!! Oh, sorry, that would be THE WORST thing to do. Seriously though, when was the last time Will Smith was in anything actually, y know, good?

Hopefully this means Will is starting to look for more serious roles now. I'd like to see Smith hook with Michael Mann again or really go out of his comfort zone and work with someone like David Fincher. He's got too much talent and charisma to simply waste it on blockbusters for the rest of his career, Smith has the potential to win an Oscar if he'd simply lower is asking price and pick challenging roles.

My thoughts exactly CHIBIK. He's needing to concentrate on his own movie career rather than push his son into every project he's doing. I do think he will be missed in the sequel thou.

People need to relax with the nepotism talk! To my recollection Will and Jaden have only appeared in two movies together and the time period between both of them was seven years.
