William Monahan to write The Associate

Shia LaBeouf’s already attached to star in the Grisham thriller

The Departed’s William Monahan has been hired to adapt John Grisham’s The Associate for Shia LaBeouf to star in.

LaBeouf became attached late last year when Transformers producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura handed him the book in early, unpublished form.

If it all works out, LaBeouf will play a Yale law student with a dark, blackmail-worthy past that a mysterious figure manipulates to make him take a job at a particular working a billion-dollar lawsuit.

There’s no word on a director for the project yet – Monahan is also busy gearing up his directorial debut London Boulevard, with Keira Knightley and Colin Farrell, so it’s unlikely he’d take the job.

Perhaps Michael Bay could take it on, which will mean the lawsuit will suddenly become about Things Blowing Up Real Awesome-like.

Is the Grisham legal thriller genre still hot? Or should the case be closed?
