Yoda spin-off movie in the pipeline?

Disney exploring potential standalone adventures

With J.J. Abrams finally installed as director for Star Wars: Episode VII, Disney executives can start thinking about how to make the most of their newly-acquired franchise, including a potential series of spin-off movies.

THR had previously reported that Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg were exploring possible storylines to develop some of the series' supporting characters in spin-off movies, and a rumour has now emerged concerning who the first of these might focus on.

AICN reports that the first standalone picture will focus on Yoda. Whether this will be the tale of a younger Yoda or a continuation of Yoda’s existing story, we don’t know, but apparently the little green fellow is the first choice to receive some dedicated development.

If that sounds promising, we do feel compelled to warn you that the site also states that George Lucas has been pitching a Jabba the Hutt spin-off around LucasFilm. Presumably Jar-Jar is next in line.

More details as we get them. In the meantime, we can look forward to Episode VII, which at this point is still slated for a 2015 arrival…

'or a continuation of Yoda’s existing story' Really? He's dead! We'd be following a force ghost! There are a lot of things that could be explored, like his origins, or the gaps where he wasn't around during the prequels, but after Jedi? It sounds pretty lame to be honest. Jabba, on the other hand, I think sounds like it'd be at least interesting.

If they are going doing the spinoff route, why not go down the reboot route also. A complete reboot of the prequel trilogy would fix many of the wrongs by a country mile.

A young Yoda yes, as a padawan yes, old no. we know what happens. The Jabba one no, i wont pay to see that, a Boba Fett yes, you could have him emerge from the sarlacc pit and thats the starting point. Id like to see a; Yoda Boba Fett A number of Jedi that escaped with the help of the librarian one who we see in Attack of the clones. With Vader hunting them.

just make the bloody thing, stop worrying about spin offs, parallel narratives or origin stories, its all padding. Just concentrate on making the next 3 films as good as they can be and Disneys investment will be safe. Franchise film making really gets my goat sometimes

Wow. Gotta say, I did NOT see this one coming. It'll probably be aimed more at kids, like the Clone Wars cartoon (and the prequel trilogy).

When the inital story about the takeover was broke and the amount that disney paid there was always the worry that they would churn out any old rubbish to make as much money back as possible, which i suppose from a business point of view is fair enough, but i think this story proves that we are in for at least a decade of random SW cr*p! - Even with a new trilogy, there wasn't any real need to tell a new story - everything got pretty well tied up with Jedi, so the main motivation behind it is money.

Despite how bad the prequels were it was pretty cool to see Yoda kick a*s.
