Zack Snyder lands a Sucker Punch

The 300 director eyes a future project

He’s about to assault our senses (in a good way) with the chaotic, historical battle epic 300, but Zack Snyder is already looking two films down the line.

He’s already hard at work preparing to finally get Alan Moore’s Watchmen on to screens, and his production company – Cruel And Unusual Films – has just set up its first project with Warner Bros.

Action fantasy Sucker Punch is set in the ‘50s and tells the disturbing tale of a girl locked away in a mental institution by her evil stepfather, who has her scheduled for a lobotomy, while she’s also being threatened by a sleazy pervert with designs on her body. To escape from her situation, she plunges herself into a fantasy world and starts to plan her escape, needing five objects to aid her efforts.

Like his work on 300, Snyder is collaborating closely with the writer of the original short story, Steve Shibuya. "A while ago I had written a script for myself and there was a sequence in it that made me think, 'How can I make a film that can have action sequences in it that aren't limited by the physical realities that normal people are limited by, but still have the story make sense so it's not, and I don't mean to be mean, like a bullshit thing like Ultraviolet or something like that?' " Snyder told The Hollywood Reporter. "And also, I was really inspired by the worlds of movies like Moulin Rouge, which is modern but at the same time timeless."

Any man who slags off the mess that is Ultraviolet gets our vote, but there’s more… He’s describing the tale as “Alice In Wonderland with machine guns…” We’re already hooked.
