After personal passion project Bullet In The Head bombed, John Woo kicked back with this 1991 blend of romance, comedy and action adventure. Chow Yun-Fat, Cherie Chung and Leslie Cheung star as a trio of light-fingered, sharp-minded orphans who set out to score One Last Job. Half-inching from Jules Et Jim, To Catch A Thief and numerous '60s comedy heist flicks, Once A Thief never entirely steals your attention. But the cast impress, and Woo is far more assured once the exuberant shoot-outs shift from France back to Hong Kong and the tone darkens.
