Out Of The Blue4

Out Of The Blue

On 13 November 1990, reclusive gun enthusiast David Gray broke the calm of tiny New Zealand town Aramoana, embarking on an arbitrary killing spree that took 13 lives – including women and children. Robert Sarkies’ low budget film evocatively recreates the events of that bloody day. Matthew Sunderland gives a rat-like, Bickle-esque turn as the embittered loner holding fiery siege to a community; Lord Of the Rings’ Karl Urban is the faltering family-man copper desperate to halt him. The massacre still touches a raw nerve in New Zealand but, filming at a neighbouring town and informed by survivors’ accounts, Sarkies manages both a sensitive and excruciatingly taut docu-thriller that’s refreshing for the genuine weight of its tragedy.
