Padre Padrone4

Scooping the Palme d’Or in 1977 (even though it was shot for TV), the Taviani brothers’ intimate epic tells of an illiterate Sardinian shepherd boy who rebels against his tyrant dad by gaining an education. Based on the life of writer Gavino Ledda, it meshes realism (rugged depictions of rural life) with the outlandish (bestiality), working up to a forceful Oedipal showdown. Look out for a young Nanni Moretti as a soldier-teacher.
