Christian Bale was born on 30 January 1974 in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, Wales, UK.
Bale made his movie debut aged 13, in Steven Spielberg's Empire Of The Sun, which was based on J.G Ballard's book of the same title.
He is probably best known for playing Bruce Wayne - otherwise known as Batman - in Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy, reprising the role in Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises.
He worked with Nolan on another project, magician movie The Prestige, in 2006.
Bale has appeared in several critically acclaimed movies, including The Machinist, Terrence Malick's The New World and experimental Bob Dylan biopic I'm Not There.
In 2000 Bale played Patrick Bateman in Mary Harron's adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis' American Psycho - a role that was long mooted for Leonardo DiCaprio - which won the actor widespread acclaim.
Christian Bale won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his work in David O Russell's The Fighter, in 2011.
