Scarlett Johansson was born on 22 November 1984, in New York City, New York.
She is perhaps best known for playing Black Widow (Natasha Romanoff), one of the key members of The Avengers superhero team in Marvel's Avengers Assemble.
Johansson was reprising the Black Widow character who first appeared in Iron Man 2, and was praised by critics and comic-book fans alike.
Many of Johansson's performances have been received well by critics, including Lost In Translation, Vicky Cristina Barcelona and Ghost World.
Johansson began her film career aged 9, appearing in the 1994 fantasy comedy North - a film notable for featuring Bruce Willis in a giant pink bunny costume.
Small roles followed, in films such as Fall and Home Alone 3, before a breakout performance in Robert Redford's The Horse Whisperer brought Scarlett to a larger audience.
She went on to work with the Coen Brothers (The Man Who Wasn't There) and Sofia Coppola (Lost In Translation), all before she turned 18.
More recently, she's worked with Woody Allen (Match Point, Scoop and Vicky Cristina Barcelona), Christopher Nolan (The Prestige) and Cameron Crowe (We Bought A Zoo).
