12 Angry Men

Sydney Lumet's righteous courtroom drama is as gripping as ever

Sidney Lumet's archetypal locked-room drama hits Blu-ray.

Barring a brief courtroom prologue, we spend the whole film in a cramped, sweaty jury room where 12 jurors (all white and male) debate their verdict on a young Puerto Rican accused of killing his dad.

Eleven reckon it’s an open- and-shut ‘guilty’, but one juror – Henry Fonda, who else? – argues ‘reasonable doubt’.

And gradually, he undermines their certainties one by one.... Lumet, making his big-screen debut, artfully deploys his camera to avoid any risk of visual monotony, and Reginald Rose’s script fluently marshals the arguments pro and con.

As gripping as ever.
