22 Bullets

Fun but arresting mobster thriller

“Complaints manager” (ie hitman) Jean Reno thought he’d retired, until 22 nasty surprises inform him, rather bluntly, otherwise. Someone even shoots his dog.

It’s an arresting opening to richard Berry’s classy Marseilles mobster flick, both more mature than Besson and more fun than Mann.

Whether talking to his cat, singing opera or popping caps in his enemies’ asses, Reno convinces and compels.

Dubbed “The professional returns” to nab some of Léon's cachet, this familiar but assured effort isn’t actually that far off the mark.
