A fight against cancer when you know the odds...

It’s unsurprising that scribe Will Reiser’s more-than-semi-autobiographical tale of a young man’s (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) diagnosis with potentially terminal cancer is an incisive treatment of a subject that could easily turn mawkish.

What surprises more is how funny it is and how truthful its characters are, from the flippant best friend (Seth Rogen, reprising his actual role in Reiser’s life) to Anna Kendrick’s well-meaning therapist.

Meanwhile, Gordon-Levitt’s turn is a quiet heartbreaker. The chat-track and featurettes on Reiser’s real experiences are disc stand-outs.
