Ron Howard’s take on the true story of mentally unstable mathematician John Nash

There’s a typically sentimental bent to Ron Howard’s take on the true story of mentally unstable mathematician John Nash (Russell Crowe); more problematic are the liberties taken by scribe Akiva Goldsman.

His Nash hallucinates human beings rather than voices, a device of convenience that cheapens and softens the portrayal of schizophrenia.

Crowe is convincingly skittish and bounces enjoyably off Paul Bettany, while Jennifer Connelly earns her Oscar in the would-be thankless role of suffering wife. But this is as dishonest as Hollywood biography gets.
