A Midnight Clear

A US Intelligence Squad locates a German Platoon wishing to surrender rather than die in the final war offensive

It's the final winter of WW2, and in the snow-bound Ardennes a platoon of young US conscripts encounters a similar-sized group of German soldiers.

Both sides know the war’s nearly over, neither lot want to die... Keith Gordon’s adap of William Wharton’s novel is low on action, long on mood and psychological complexity.

A young, then-unknown cast – Ethan Hawke, Gary Sinise, Kevin Dillon, Peter Berg – impress, and Gordon (who provides a detailed 50-minute account of the production) treats his material with appreciative respect.
