Gena Rowlands, always at her finest for director husband John Cassavetes, gives a tour de force turn as a working-class mother sliding into mental illness.
She’s well matched by Peter Falk, as her loving but imperceptive husband.
At times the energy and intensity of the ensemble scenes threaten to go OTT - everyone gets in on the act, at the tops of their voices - but the cumulative emotional impact of the film is searing.
Rowlands and Cassavetes both earned Oscar noms.
Extras include Falk on Cassavetes and a chat with the latter’s assistant.
