This decent but sentimental version of the WWI novel was made for TV, and plays out as such. It’s well cast (Richard Thomas suitably distracted
in the lead, Ian Holm and Ernest Borgnine excellent in support) but it’s soft, making the war more soapy tragedy than savage madness.
