Tony Kaye's first movie takes no prisoners

As directorial debuts go, Tony Kaye’s was a mixed blessing - an ugly row between Kaye, the studio and star/producer Edward Norton resulted in the director disowning the final cut.

Shame; it remains a brutally gripping study of reactionary values and siblings.

Norton is Derek, an ex-white supremacist whose time in jail has shaken up his belief system, struggling to keep younger brother Danny (Edward Furlong) from going down the same path.

Norton’s rarely been better or rawer, while the brash violence is offset by the domestic scenes’ quiet intensity.
