Vincente Minnelli's Gershwin scored musical (which scooped six Oscars, including Best Pic) stars the ever-athletic Gene Kelly as a struggling Yank artist who falls for the Parisienne charms of Leslie Caron (her screen debut).
There’s good support from ivory-tickling Oscar Levant, spurned heiress Nina Foch, and Kelly’s love rival, Georges Guétary, and though it is tooth-achingly sweet in parts, the music, the dancing and the bright, brash Technicolor still have the power to exhilarate.
