Bad Lieutenant

Keitel gives a bolstering performance in this gothic thriller

Bad Lieutenant

Upgraded to Blu in the wake of Werner Herzog’s warped reimagining, Abel Ferrara’s shocker is a maelstrom of Catholic neurosis and self-destruction.

A gothic descent into drug-hazed madness, its melodrama verges on stylised parody (the nun rape scene is like something from a Hammer film).

But Keitel’s performance is a career highlight, his corrupt cop stumbling around the Big Apple in a crumpled daze, generally being a shit before finding redemption (of sorts).

A biblical fable transplanted to horrible early-’90s NYC, it’s still searing stuff.
