Battle: Los Angeles

Booming L.A. alien carnage

Battle Los Angeles review

After smart genre spins (District 9, Monsters), dumb sci-fi took revenge with Skyline and this bug-grunt blow-’em-up.

In fairness, at least Jonathan Liebesman’s Battle knows its limitations, wasting little time on story or subtext before assuming the panic-cam POV of marines saving civilians from aliens.

Aaron Eckhart’s troubled vet’s backstory gets milked for clichéd emo baggage, but the Black Hawk Down ballistics prove easier to submit to than displays of sentiment, the result playing like Monsters’ opening titles pumped to resemble a recruitment ad.

A battery of extras revels in the meticulously mounted carnage.
