Being Flynn

An A-list cast head up a straight-to-DVD drama

Given its high-calibre talent Robert De Niro, Julianne Moore, Paul Dano – it’s a surprise that this is a DVD premiere.

On the other hand, it is relentlessly grim stuff.

Based on Nick Flynn’s experimental memoir Another Bullshit Night In Suck City (a better title than something that sounds like a Tron spin-off), Paul Weitz’s (About A Boy) film follows the parallel lives of a hard-bitten mythmaking conman (De Niro) and his estranged son (Dano), a would-be writer scarred by the suicide of his mother (Moore, in flashbacks).

Addiction, madness, resentment… Weitz trowels it all on, but the acting’s classy enough to offer respite.
