Bel Ami

3

An adaptation of the classic novel.

R-Pattz plays a character more viciously vampiric than Edward Cullen could dream of being in this sombre adaptation of Guy de Maupassant’s classic novel.

The deeply cynical tale of ruthless, talentless 19th-Century Parisian social climber Georges Duroy and his ascent to power by sexual manipulation should be grimly fascinating, but is hamstrung by dour direction and pancake-flat characters.

Pattinson acquits himself well enough, but this is a film that talks a good game about moral decline while barely scratching the surface of its sociopathic protagonist’s psyche.
