Black Narcissus

Kerr's nun in a 1947 masterpiece

Powell and Pressburger, serve up a sensual banquet in this melodrama, in which five nuns stationed in the Himalayas find their vows tested by their surroundings and a studly Brit (David Farrar). Deborah Kerr suffers gloriously as the tormented head nun, while Kathleen Byron astonishes as a sister driven to insanity by forbidden desire.

And then there’s Jack Cardiff’s Oscar-winning cinematography, a vivid tableau of cool blues and scary reds so alive you can almost taste them.
