A trumpeter falls for a flugel-blowing management analyst

If Ken Loach made romcoms, they’d probably be as angry as Mark Herman’s film.

Released just before New Labour came into office, it flicks two fingers up at the Conservatives’ policy of coal-pit closures, while also delivering laughs as Ewan McGregor’s trumpeter falls for a flugel-blowing management analyst (Tara Fitzgerald).

Centred on a failing mining community’s brass band, it’s no Working Title floppy-haired frippery but a class-conscious comedy that isn’t afraid to wear its politics on its sleeve: The Full Monty with tubas.
