An adaptation of Daniel Clay's novel

Three families in a suburban cul-de-sac represent (a bit too blatantly) ‘broken Britain’ in Rufus Norris’ debut feature, adapted from Daniel Clay’s novel.

Events are observed through the eyes of 11-year-old Skunk (a scene-stealing, totally assured performance from newcomer Eloise Laurence), daughter of Tim Roth’s decent solicitor, as the lives of the families get fatally entangled.

Broken tries to pack in too much and topples into melodrama well before the end, besides piling all the blame on brutal working-class dad Rory Kinnear and his tearaway daughters.

But Norris draws powerful performancesfrom his impressive cast.
