Broken City

Wahlberg and Crowe go head to head in a gritty noir that ain't Chinatown

Mark Wahlberg is a shabby gumshoe with a chequered past, hired by Russell Crowe’s oily NY mayor to follow his other half (Catherine Zeta-Jones), whom he suspects of infidelity.

Don’t get overly excited though, because – in spite of the snoozy subplot involving high-level corruption – Chinatown this isn’t.

But though this noiry thriller never quite delivers on its promise (Brian Tucker’s screenplay was plucked from 2008’s prestigious ‘Black List’), there’s enough stylishly gritty intrigue to make for a worthy mid-week watch.

And Crowe royally enjoys himself, oozing charismatic smarm through layers of fake tan.
