Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

Robert Redford & Paul Newman play the best bank robbers in the West

When The going gets tough, the tough go to Bolivia in George Roy Hill’s jokey anti-western, a buddy movie responsible for spawning a prequel (Butch & Sundance: The Early Days), a semi-sequel (1973’s The Sting) and a film festival in Utah.

Robert Redford and Paul Newman are the affable gun-slingers while Katharine Ross charms as the schoolmarm for whom they both have the hots.

Yet perhaps the real star here is screenwriter William Goldman for smuggling a meditation on mortality and obsolescence inside the saddlebag of a spirited Wild West horse opera.
