Underrated Brit director Bernard Rose today spends his time on digital Tolstoy adaptations with Danny Huston, but he’ll always be best known for this classic (and classy) chiller.
As the eponymous urban legend, Tony Todd and his hook could creep out the sturdiest horror aficionado, and an intrepid Virginia Madsen digs far deeper than scary movies usually demand.
Best of all is Rose’s eye for locations in the Chicago projects, all-too-real horrors of neglect, deprivation and decay that prove gothic nightmares aren’t confined to storm-swept castles.
