Ruggero Deodato’s video nasty poses an ethical dilemma.
A film of two halves – the first showing the search for a documentary crew lost in the Amazon, the second made up of their shocking “found footage” – it’s a confrontational exposé of man’s inhumanity to man (and woman and animal). But it adds to the misery with scenes of unsimulated animal slaughter.
This Blu-ray features two good docs and a director’s cut purporting to solve the issue, but actually dodging it.
Deodato’s re-edit can’t bring the poor animals back, or lessen the film’s extraordinary power.
