Back projection, wobbly sets, over-earnest acting, crash zooms, scratched celluloid, shoddy continuity, jarring musical numbers…
The joke here is not much different to that of the Grindhouse double-bill, only this time the target/inspiration is the Latin-American melodramas of the ’70s. Even at 85 minutes, it’s a stretch, but casting Gael GarcÍa Bernal and Diego Luna is cute, and Will Ferrell – playing a dim rancher – brings sincerity.
Even when babbling the whole movie in nonsense-Spanish.
